St Mungo’s, London’s leading homeless charity, is fighting to save
Europe’s largest work and learning service for homeless people. St Mungo’s European funded training and employment services, which helped more than 600 vulnerable men and women last year, are under threat of closure due to an 86% slash in available funding.
Karen Buck MP visited St Mungo’s Bridge Training centre on 24 January to see for herself how vital this service is to London’s homeless and vulnerable men and women.
St Mungo’s have now got the backing of local MPs to back their call for action against such a huge reduction in available funding for services that help thousands of socially excluded people every year.
Every year St Mungo’s Bridge training centre and Programme centre help homeless and vulnerable men and women learn to read and write, prepare for maintaining their tenancy, find and hold down a job, get back in touch with their family, and move on with their lives.
Andy shields, St Mungo’s Director of Work and Learning Services says:
“There are many barriers to work for those who are homeless and vulnerable. We know that 77% of homeless people want to work and that less than 5% do. Through our Bridge Training centre and our Programme centre we are able to provide the skills and support needed to bridge that gap. St Mungo’s work and learning services help homeless and vulnerable men and women to take the right steps towards education and employment and to move on with their lives.”
